We had Emily Davies in for Work Experience from West Buckland School - this blog outlines her week with us!

First steps...

Due to me only being sixteen, my experience in the working world is rather limited. Having recently left the comforts of school and made the move to Sixth Form, I was keen to gain experience in a field which interested me and enabled me to start making decisions regarding my future – this is where Roots came in!

Having learnt about Roots previously through my school’s connections, I decided to enquire about the possibility of gaining some work experience over half-term and was thrilled to receive a response within a day. As I had hoped, they were more than happy to accommodate. I’ve never really worked in an office setting before, so the idea of coming to Roots seemed rather daunting at first – I was predominantly worried about meeting everyone and working in an environment that was completely new to me. However, within the first day I was made to feel extremely welcome and I started learning new skills almost instantly.

What I got up to:

When I first arrived a range of tasks had been set for me, from dealing with their petty cash to checking websites for new clients. However, these tasks only act as a guideline, the team are more than happy to cater your experience around your interests. I was able to work alongside different members of the team, all with their own field of expertise. This enabled me to gain a range of experience as it meant that I wasn’t limited to one area. If they know that you prefer one area over another, they will set tasks specifically focused on that.

After spending a short time speaking to some of the team, they discovered my likes and dislikes. I particularly enjoy English so they started to mould tasks in a way that would allow me to use this. I worked with Emily who set me up writing some mailers for an energy tech company (& of course this blog). This made my week at Roots extremely enjoyable as I felt as though my work was being tailored to what I like and am naturally suited to. Due to everyone in the team having their own specific field, it means that they can cater for almost anyone through meeting a range of different interests.

My thoughts:

Reflecting on the week, simply put I have loved the whole experience. Working at Roots has enabled me to learn a range of new skills and develop others. I have gained a great insight into the world of marketing – so much so that it is a career I am now potentially considering for the future. All of the team made me feel extremely welcome right from day one, offering me great support and advice. I shouldn’t pick favourites: however, a special mention must go to the office Security Guard, Cicero the sausage dog. Although his sneaky and playful character proved to be a distraction at times, he plays a key role in keeping everyone’s spirits high and made my time in the office that much more enjoyable.

Overall, I would say that if you are looking to gain experience in the marketing industry, Roots is the place to come!
